Sunday TR by Jim Wallach

"Today was one of those days - the stars and planets aligned, company was great, the fish active and hungry.

Met with Funkmaster and Ghosttale in Golden early am, planned to meet with COCarp later on after his morning ventrue on the DS ( which was productive). Funk and I have fished the canyon many, many times, but this was both COCarp and Ghosttales innaugural visit. Simply put, theses no other place quite like it - the incredible scenery, phenominal fishing.. it spoils you to the core. So why not corrupt two others!

Got on the water around 930 or so, beautiful skies, calm wind, only a handful of vehicles on the eight mile road in which is always a welcome sight. Decided to hit the upper sunny areas first and wait to hit other areas later on when the sun finally hit them. Once in place, first glance showed a river full of fish cruising and feeding very actively, typical for the canyon. Got Ghosttale rigged up with the usual fare for the area and season and went to work. Ghost has only been fly fishing for 6 months, but he's a born natural with a good cast and an eye for fish! We took out place along a long, wide run each with plenty of water and got to work. Normally these fish will take tiny dries (20-24) and small nymphs with gusto, but this day would demand another tactic - MEAT! So here we stood, fish all around, the right flies... and plenty of refusals. Now, funk has an arsenal of killer dries for the area and a keen sense of how the fish want them so he stuck to his plan to fish dries while i decided to abandon them and smash the hatch with big uglies ! I tell ya, it was like using a laser pointer on a herd of cats ! Every fish would chase 20ft to take a swipe at streamers! I dont know which was more fun - watching the frantic chase, or the viscious takes that would ensue! Got into some great fish right away on trusty Skeletor! Not to be outdone, Ghost took the same path with a simple balck bugger which produced his first canyon fish as well as his first SRC! All the while, Funk diligently worked his dries into the the hungry mouths of several fish much to the dismay of our downstream neighbors. Did i mention he has a knack for working dries?
By this time, the three of us had each caught our share of fish when COCarp showed up. One mention of streamer bite and he was in the game. Not long till he was into fish as well!
Early afternoon we headed downriver to the site of last years Black Friday Fish Fest (which was a blast !!) to work the great runs there. We split into two groups, COCarp and I working streamers upstream, while Ghost and Funk worked the riffs downstream. Found many, many great fish in both areas, everyone hooked up with quality fish. Bows, CuttBows, SRC's and a lone beautiful brown were all more than happy to take our offerings.
There are good days, and then there are magical days - this was incredible! In the end, we all had stories and pics of awesome fish, and that two noobs to the river had just as good a day as the vets is priceless. We each topped out at 15+ fish each, and each had several 20"+ fish to hand. It just doesnt get much better than that!"
