IPWA

August 23rd, 2008
Chris did the research and had been eyeing out a Creek since he arrived in May. Took off from Denver at 6:45AM headed towards Granby, CO to swing by the ranger station to pick up our camping permit for the weekend experience in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. 9:05 -We leave the ranger station headed for the lake where the trail head was found. We hiked in for 5 miles on a low to moderate grade hike on the trail. Once we arrive at our camp we threw down our gear and headed for the river for a few hours of fishing. All the fish up here were greenback cutthroat trout so no fresh fish for dinner. We had a great forecast highs of 80 with clear blue Colorado skies. The cutthroat were killing the stimulators all day long! Together we all lost count but figuring we caught 45 plus trout that afternoon.

This is Sally Jane. A mule deer that was about 20 feet from our camp for about 3 hours grubbin out. At first she didn't know what to think of us though soon after she went about her business.

So as soon as the sun came up we hiked 2 miles straight up this hill side to a lake, an alpine lake that was supposed to hold big cutthroat trout. Unfortunately, the lake is extremely deep and we were not able to find any fish at all. Bummer. Though, there was a small run off pond just below the lake that was about an acre and a half big. It held some very nice cut-bows which is a hybrid rainbow and greenback cutthroat equaling a beautiful trout.

This was the my first camping/hiking/fishing weekend trip into the wilderness in CO and we just had a ball. Awesome fishing combined with great companions and a unforgettable weekend.
